Poison and Honey by Kristen Brand is the first book in the Dark and Otherwordly Series. I fell in love with this action-packed fantasy novella.

Poison and Honey Summary

Leigh Morgan is a kitchen maid in the Dwencanti palace. The perfect cover for an intelligence spy. Leigh’s job is to gather intelligence for her group to plan an attack on the Dwencanti royals to free the humans from slavery.

All she has to do is lay low and blend in. She was very successful until one-night Dredarion decided to make a move on his brother, Rabsumorai, to overthrow his position as heir to the thrown. Leigh just happened to be the servant walking by when he decided to execute his plan.

So much for blending in. Since Leigh played her role in Dredarion’s plan flawlessly. He takes an interest in her, so he moved her from the kitchen duties to his private handmaid. Now her job is to carry out secret missions of his. Dredarion is tall dark dangerous and handsome. He also doesn’t make it a secret that he is attracted to her. Getting involved with the prince you plan to attack and steal all his servants won’t go over well in the end.

Poison and Honey Review

Leigh is a badass. She basically becomes a double spy, while resisting her attraction to the prince whose kingdom is kidnapping humans into slavery.

Dredarion at first you think he is just a jealous second child prince, who thinks he deserves to be King. Insecure, always trying to prove himself as the superior brother. Kind of a cookie-cutter character at first! I was surprised about his development in such a short book.

Novellas usually are not my jam. I like to sit and live in a fantasy world. But the blurb totally hooked me. It is a short read that is action-packed.

You do go back and forth between Leigh’s and Dredarion’s perspective.

Some reviewers have said that they wanted more background info and relationship building. While I’ll agree I would like more world-building, I feel like this is just the beginning since it is a series. So the lack of info didn’t bother me. Also the relationship building, again just the beginning. If this was a stand-alone then I would have something to say.

Like I said above, a little lacking but its a novella. I never felt like I couldn’t picture what was going on in the story.

I basically read this book in one sitting. I loved how action-packed it was.

This is probably my favorite part of the story. It is an enemies to lovers romance. The suppressed chemistry between them puts you on edge. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

I loved it, and I can’t wait for the next book. If you’re looking for an urban fantasy romance with nonstop action. Pick this one up.

About Kristen Brand

If Kristen Brand could have any superpower, she’d want telekinesis so she wouldn’t have to move from her computer to pour a new cup of tea. She spends far too much time on the internet, and when she’s not writing, she’s usually reading novels or comic books.
