I picked up Fated (The Will of Yggdrasil) because of the cover and the premise. I really like the cover, I do read stories based on the cover sometime. Stories base on any kind of mythology is always super intriguing to me. Plus this one had the promise of a quest, death, and romance.
Fated (The Will of Yggdrasil) Summary
Madeline was living a slightly secluded but a pretty normal human life, before she was kidnapped and brought to The Salr by fae who called themselves Vaettir.
The Vaettir who kidnapped Madeline claimed that she was a type of Vaettir that they call an executioner. Executioners’ powers include taking people’s souls alive or dead and releasing them from there bodies. Not super thrilled with her new job Madeline decides she is going to learn how to control her power then resume her old life and not look back.
Madeline is drawn to Alaric, but he helped kidnapper her so there is that. She is super conflicted on if she should trust him, on one hand, he is trying to be her friend and help navigate this brand new world. But he kidnapped her and is holding her hostage against her will so he is the reason she is there. Tough choice, to, or not to fall in love with your captor, that is the question.
Not only is Madeline held against her will in this strange place, but the leader of the Vaettir wants Madeline to find a mysterious charm. He has tasked Alaric to make sure she finds it. So she also has to figure out if Alaric’s attention is just his job or not.
Madeline has to figure out who to trust. Who wants the charm for ultimate power and who is working on whos side.
Fated (The Will of Yggdrasil) Review
To be honest I really didn’t like Fated until about 50 to 75% into it. It wasn’t until the story got to the action and history of the Vaettir that I started consuming the book. I thought the charm quest was the best part of the story. They were trying to find the charm while trying to stay one step ahead of people coming after them. With each new person that is supposed to “help them” they had to figure out if their motive was align with Madeline’s or they wanted the charm for themselves. She even wasn’t sure about Alaric. Where they helping them find the charm or did they just plan to steal it in the end.
I like that Madeline was put on the front line in danger. She wasn’t just hiding behind the skirt of someone else. I don’t like it when the heroine is too protected or gets out of trouble too easily.
I didn’t like Alaric, was predatory and creepy. One minute the was he is super perverted and then the next he is being kind and trying to help her with this new world. It didn’t work for me.
I wish that the story spend more time on the history of the Vaettir and less on what I felt was a forced love story of Alaric and Madeline.
